Alex Redington, violin, was the first violinist and a founding member of the celebrated Doric String Quartet for 27 years, having formed the group at the age of 15. He has also performed extensively as a recitalist and concerto soloist, including with the Vienna Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestra under conductors such as John Adams and Edward Gardner. Alex has toured extensively through Europe, Japan, Australia, and the USA and performed at many of the world’s leading venues, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and Wigmore Hall. His passion for chamber music has led to collaborations with Benjamin Grosvenor, Jonathan Biss, Pieter Wispelwey, Alexander Melnikov, Marc-André Hamelin, Mark Padmore, Ian Bostridge, and Elisabeth Leonskaja, among others. Three of his recordings with the Doric Quartet have been nominated for a Gramophone Award. Alongside his performing career, Alex is a committed teacher, holding faculty positions at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Cambridge and serving as Head of Strings at the Purcell School. He plays on a Paolo Castello violin made in Genoa circa 1780.
