Abel Pereira

Abel Pereira was born in Porto (Portugal) in the late 70s, was appointed Principal Horn of the National Symphony Orchestra by Christoph Eschenbach in 2014. He earned his Master in 2001 in Frankfurt (Germany), a Master in Music/Marketing and a Ph.D in Teaching/Performance from the Porto University in 2012. He also studied conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Since his first solo performance at the age of 11, he has developed an intense concert and master class schedule in many international music festivals around the world through Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Pereira was awarded at the Leeuwarden International Horn Competition (Netherlands), Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen (Germany), Concertino Praga (Czech Republic), PJM-RDP (Portugal), and he won the European Master-Prize (England).

His discography includes the complete Mozart Horn Concerti, the urtext Mozart 4th Concerto, Romantic Repertoire for Horn and Piano, Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante. He was a teacher at the Porto and Lisbon Universities for more than 10 years. Over the course of his career, he has since performed more than 60 solo concerts with many world class orchestras.

He played Principal Horn with Porto Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, London Philharmonic, and Berliner Philharmoniker.

Pereira is also Music Director of the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra and conductor of the NSO-SMI Orchestra.

He plays an Alexander 103 horn with a V. Bach 3 mouthpiece. As a hobby he loves boating and cooking.
