One of America’s most acclaimed chamber ensembles, the multiple Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet brings its trademark virtuosity, fearless programming, and deeply unified sound to Constellations in a program spanning nearly two centuries. Mendelssohn’s astonishingly mature A-minor Quartet, written while the composer was still a teenager, pairs youthful passion with extraordinary formal imagination; Ligeti’s Métamorphoses nocturnes transforms the quartet into a constantly shifting landscape of eerie stillness, wit, color, and explosive energy. After intermission, Constellations Artistic Director Ellen Hwangbo joins the Pacifica for Schumann’s beloved Piano Quintet in E-flat Major—one of the great landmarks of the chamber repertoire, overflowing with lyricism, drama, and irresistible Romantic momentum.
