This wide-ranging program celebrates the brilliance of solo and chamber music alike. Pianist Kuok‑Wai Lio, recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, opens the program with Brahms' introspective and inventive Variations on an Original Theme. The Last Stand Quartet, comprised of members of the National Symphony Orchestra, then takes center stage with Ravel’s String Quartet, a shimmering masterwork of French Impressionism. Joined by acclaimed double bassist Anthony Manzo, they will also perform the richly textured Intermezzo originally from Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2, blending symphonic warmth with Bohemian charm. Kuok-Wai brings the program to a close with the radiant lyricism of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed in a chamber reduction with string quintet.
